WCD is tomorrow

Check that the ribbons are at the door or the register and the sticker is on the door. A ribbon for each team member who wants one.

WCD is today

Ribbons at the register, sticker on the door. Everything else is a normal day: no program, no schedule.

Help your city say hello on November 21

That day, people will put on ribbons and go about their usual business: coffee, work, shopping, a walk. Any ribbon means “you can say hello to me.” A coffee shop, bookstore, coworking space or store can make that first hello easier: ribbons at the register, a sticker on the door, a few words to guests.

One or all of them. A basket of ribbons at the register is enough.

Ribbons at the door or register

A basket of ribbons in four colors at the door or the register. Anyone who asks can take one: no purchase, no strings attached.

Satin ribbon 2–3 cm (about 1 in) wide, cut into 40 cm (16 in) pieces. 2 m (about 2 yd) of each color makes 20 ribbons.

The “You can say hello here” sticker

For your door, window or register. A guest with a ribbon sees right away that it’s OK to start a chat here. We’ll send the design: print it at any size.

Tell your guests about the day

A post, a newsletter or a sign at the register: “On November 21, wear a ribbon, and people can say hello to you.” We’ll send ready-made copy.

Team in ribbons

A barista or salesperson wearing a ribbon is the first hello a guest gets right at the door. Only those who want to wear one do.

if you have room

A table with conversation cards

Have a shared table? Put question cards on it. No host, no schedule: people sit down, pick a card and talk. We’ll send the deck.

A brand without a physical place? Tell your audience about the day and put ribbons on your team. That’s enough.

What we don’t do

WCD isn’t an event or a singles night, but a normal day when it’s easier to say “hello.” Let’s keep it that way.

  • Don’t call your place a WCD spot. Spots on the map are squares, parks and waterfronts where people walk anyway.
  • Don’t hold an event: no program, no host, no speakers and no invitations for a set time.
  • Don’t promise guests a crowd or new connections, only that it’s OK to say hello at your place.
  • Don’t tie ribbons to a purchase, a follow or contact details: anyone who asks gets one.
  • Don’t print logos on ribbons. A ribbon means “you can say hello to me,” not an ad.
  • Don’t collect guests’ contacts: no lists, no forms.
  • WCD is for adults, 18+. Ribbons go to adult guests.
  • If someone’s ribbon is off or they’ve said “no,” leave them be. Your house rules apply as on any other day.

questions

Frequently asked questions

Will our place appear on the map of spots?

No. Spots are busy public places: squares, parks, waterfronts where people walk anyway. You can help without being a spot: a ribbon works anywhere there are people, including at your place.

Can we host a WCD meetup or party?

Not on November 21. WCD isn’t an event: no program, no set time and no “everyone come to us” invitations. The best thing a place can do is welcome guests with ribbons like old friends.

Where do I get ribbons, and how many do I need?

At a craft store: satin ribbon 2–3 cm (about 1 in) wide in red, yellow, blue and green. Cut it into 40 cm (16 in) pieces: 2 m (about 2 yd) of each color makes 20 ribbons. Any brand will do.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. We don’t charge money or sell ads. It’s all free for guests too.

What if a guest is being pushy?

Your usual house rules apply. A ribbon means “OK to say hello,” not “anything goes.” If someone takes their ribbon off or says “no,” the conversation is over.

We’re a brand without a physical place. How can we help?

Tell your audience about the day and put ribbons on your team. WCD has no logo ribbons and no sponsored integrations.
